Dane County Farmers Market

In the fall, the Dane County Farmers’ Market turns Capitol Square into a colorful, cozy celebration of the season. Local farmers and vendors offer fresh apples, squash, pumpkins, and handmade goods, all in a festive atmosphere framed by autumn leaves. It’s the perfect place to sip cider, pick up seasonal favorites, and enjoy the crisp Madison air. And you don’t have to be here on a weekend to partake in this quintessential Madison tradition–there are many different farmers’ markets around town during the work week, including Wednesday mornings on Martin Luther King Boulevard just off the capitol square.

Ghost Tours

Madison’s ghost tours bring spooky stories and local legends to life on crisp fall nights. Walk through haunted sites like Capitol Square, Science Hall, and the Majestic Theatre while guides share eerie tales from the city’s past. It’s a fun, spooky way to explore Madison’s darker side. Tours are held through two companies–American Ghosts Walks and Mad City Ghost Walks. Check out their tour options and pick the chilling stories of haunted Madison of your choice.

Gleam at Olbrich Gardens (Aug 30-Oct 25)

Gleam is an annual, outdoor exhibit of illuminated art installations created by local, regional, and international artists. Each year is a different theme, but now in its 10th year, this year’s theme is reflection to celebrate the milestone and look back on the exhibits of past years. All of the large-scale light installations are displayed in the 16 acres of outdoor gardens at Olbrich. This event occurs only at night, and tickets can be purchased ahead of time starting on August 5th. This stunning, unique, and whimsical event would make a great outing for small groups.

Fall Color at UW Arboretum

The Midwest is known for its fall color, and Madison of course contributes to the vibrant, seasonal display. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum becomes a tapestry of fiery reds, golden yellows, and warm oranges. Wander through its 1,200 acres—especially Wingra Woods, the Grady Tract, Longenecker Horticultural Gardens, and Curtis Prairie—to see sugar maples, oaks, and more species of magnificent trees at their most colorful. Trails ranging from short loops to longer hikes showcase a rich mix of remnant forests, restored prairies, and ornamental plantings, all glowing with autumn's majesty.

Madison Night Market

While typically seen as a summer event in most Madison tourist itineraries, this once-a-month (on select Thursdays from 5-9), seasonal nighttime market occurs through October 16th. State Street, Gilman Street, Capitol Square, and nearby blocks fill with over 100 local artisans, food carts, and live music. Stroll through sidewalk booths offering handmade crafts, gourmet snacks, and fresh produce, while nearby shops stay open late with special offers. Themes vary by month—past events have celebrated UW–Madison, Madison sports, Hispanic heritage, and even “Science on the Square” in October.
