Madison has always had a strong connection to the performing arts, and the next two years are shaping up to be an especially exciting time for theatre lovers. From major Broadway tours arriving at Overture Center for the Arts to new productions from Madison’s homegrown theatre companies, the 2026–27 season offers plenty of reasons to make a night of it downtown.
Whether you’re looking for a big Broadway musical, an intimate local production, or a classic story with a fresh perspective, here are some of the performances to look forward to in Madison in 2026 and 2027.
Broadway Comes to Madison
Overture Center’s 2026–27 Broadway season brings an impressive lineup of nationally touring productions to downtown Madison. The season opens with The Wiz, running October 6–11, 2026. The beloved musical puts a soulful, funk- and R&B-infused spin on The Wizard of Oz in a new production created for the 21st century.
Later in the fall, Maybe Happy Ending arrives November 24–29. The six-time Tony Award-winning musical tells the unexpected love story of two robots and a houseplant, offering a charming and unconventional take on the romantic comedy.
The Broadway lineup continues into 2027 with SIX in January, Death Becomes Her in March, Hell’s Kitchen in May, Hadestown in June, The Outsiders in July, and Jersey Boys in August.
For Broadway fans, that means a full calendar of award-winning productions without travelling all the way to New York City to experience Broadway.
Forward Theater Looks to the Past
Madison’s local theatre scene will be just as busy. Forward Theater Company’s 2026–27 season features four plays connected by a shared theme: stories rooted in America’s past that offer a new perspective on the present.
The season begins with Steady She Goes, a world premiere running September 10–27, 2026. Inspired by the real-life story of Mary Ann Brown Patten, the production follows a woman who takes command of a clipper ship when her husband becomes seriously ill during a voyage around Cape Horn.
Next comes Gaslight, Steven Dietz’s new adaptation of the classic thriller, running October 29–November 15. The season will continue with additional productions exploring stories from America’s past and the people who shaped it.
For audiences who enjoy discovering compelling stories beyond the Broadway stage, Forward Theater remains an important part of Madison’s performing arts community.
Madison Opera Takes the Stage
Opera fans have plenty to look forward to as well. Madison Opera’s 2026–27 season opens with Norma by Vincenzo Bellini on October 30 and November 1, 2026. This beloved bel canto opera will be performed in Wisconsin for the first time.
The season continues with Postcard from Morocco and culminates with one of opera’s most recognizable titles, Carmen, on April 23 and 25, 2027. Bizet’s classic story of passion, freedom and fate will be performed in French with projected English translations.
Together, the season offers a mix of familiar classics and works that may be new discoveries for Madison audiences.
More Local Theatre to Discover
Some of Madison’s most rewarding theatre experiences happen on smaller stages throughout the city. Madison Theatre Guild’s 2026–27 season includes Eurydice; Dear Jack, Dear Louise; and Rumors; bringing everything from Greek mythology to wartime romance and classic comedy to local audiences.
Four Seasons Theatre is also continuing its long tradition of showcasing local performers and musicians. In April 2027, the company will present Ragtime: The Symphonic Concert at the Wisconsin Union Theater, featuring a 24-person cast of local singers and actors accompanied by a 34-piece orchestra.
And for those who like their theatre a little more unexpected, Overture’s Fringe Festival will return in 2027 following its successful debut, celebrating bold creativity and local voices.
Make a Night of It in Downtown Madison
One of the best things about seeing theatre in Madison is how easy it is to turn a performance into a full evening downtown. Grab dinner before the show, explore State Street, enjoy a cocktail or dessert afterward, and take in the energy of the Capitol Square.
For visitors, staying downtown makes the experience even easier. The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club is just steps from Overture Center, State Street, and the Capitol Square, making it a convenient home base for a weekend built around the arts.
Whether you’re catching a Broadway favorite, discovering a new local production, or experiencing opera for the first time, Madison’s 2026 and 2027 theatre calendar offers plenty to put on your list.
