When the sun goes down in Madison, the city doesn’t slow down—it comes alive. Start Downtown

For visitors staying at The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club, some of Madison’s best nightlife is right outside the door. State Street stretches from the Capitol Square toward the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and is lined with bars, restaurants, cafés and entertainment venues. The Capitol Square is another popular destination, with everything from cocktail lounges and restaurants to lively patios and neighborhood bars nearby.

Grab a Drink

Madison’s bar scene is as diverse as the city itself. Looking for a classic neighborhood bar? You’ll find plenty of them throughout downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. Prefer craft cocktails? • Young Blood Beer Co.: Young Blood Beer Company is a trendy downtown brewery known for its creative craft beers, colorful space, and lively, modern atmosphere.
• Oz By Oz: Oz by Oz is a sleek downtown cocktail bar known for its creative drinks, upscale vibe, and late-night energy.
• Ivory Room Piano Bar: A lively dueling piano bar known for its interactive performances, sing-along atmosphere, and high-energy nightlife in downtown Madison.

Catch Live Music

Live music is a major part of Madison’s nightlife. Local and touring musicians take the stage at venues throughout the city, with everything from rock and indie to jazz, folk, and electronic music on the calendar.

For a larger performance, check out the Overture Center for the Arts, located just a short walk from the hotel. Smaller venues around downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods offer a more intimate way to discover Madison’s local music scene.

Also nearby and within walking distance of the hotel are The Orpheum Theatre and Majestic Theatre. Both of these historic venues host a variety of musical performances throughout the year from local artists to national touring groups and artists.

If comedy is more your style, Madison has plenty of opportunities to catch a show. Comedy on State and live performance venues regularly feature local comedians, touring acts and improv, making it easy to add some laughs to your evening.

Late-Night Food

A great night out usually ends with something to eat. Madison’s downtown dining scene includes plenty of options for satisfying those late-night cravings, from burgers and pizza to tacos, sandwiches and other casual favorites. State Street is especially well known for its late-night food options, making it a popular stop after an evening out.

At the top of State Street, just a short walk from the hotel, Ian’s Pizza is open until bar time on the weekends, so if you’d like to grab a slice before calling it a night, Ian’s has something for everyone from a simple cheese or pepperoni to macaroni and cheese (yes, on a pizza).

Of course, there are plenty of options to choose from for a late-night bite:

• Paul’s Pel’meni: Offers simple Russian-style dumplings made with local ingredients.
• Natt Spil: A longtime downtown favorite for small plates and a more eclectic late-night meal.
• The Great Dane: A good option for groups looking for a brewery/restaurant atmosphere, with the downtown location listed with a late-night menu until 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Explore Beyond Downtown

While downtown is a convenient place to start, Madison’s nightlife extends well beyond the Capitol Square. Neighborhoods such as Atwood, Willy Street and the Near East Side have their own mix of bars, breweries, restaurants and live music venues, each with a distinct local personality.

Whether you’re looking for a lively night on State Street or a more laid-back evening at a neighborhood bar, exploring different parts of the city is one of the best ways to experience Madison after dark.

Some Willy Street favorites include:

• Crystal Corner: A true Willy Street institution, Crystal Corner is a classic neighborhood dive bar with live music, pool tables, darts and a distinctly Madison feel. Located at the corner of Williamson and Baldwin streets, it’s a great place to catch local bands and settle in for a late night.
• Mickey’s Tavern: A classic Willy Street tavern open until 2–2:30 a.m. depending on the night. It’s a good fit for a casual, old-school Madison nightlife vibes.
• Weary Traveler Free House: One of the more distinctive Willy Street stops, with eclectic comfort food and a cozy, quirky atmosphere. It’s open until midnight.
